1. When going from C-C and there is no pressure in the back court, get to the FTLE in the front count, run to the position, do not slide up the floor, your eyes are bouncing.

2. Proximity and Primary are not always the closest official. 

3. Do not get stacked or straight lined, you  have to move to get an open angle.

4. A player may grasp the ring to prevent themselves from injury.

5. There are “3” types of violations. Free Throw, Floor, Basket.

Correctable Error

There are “5” correctable errors:
1. Failure to award a merited free throw.
2. Awarding an unmerited free throw.
3. An attempt by a wrong player.
4. Attempt at the wrong basket.
5. Erroneously counting or canceling a score.


The formula for the first “4” correctable errors:

Formula- Error, Clock Starts, Dead Ball, officials  must correct before ball becomes live.


The formula for # 5.
Clock running, error, dead ball, live ball, dead ball, officials must correct before ball becomes live.

1. On multiple free throw attempts as the Lead Official,  do not stand next to the last player. For all free throws be 4-6 feet off the end line. This is the NFHS and IAABO Manual Mechanic. 

2. In 3 person officiating as the Lead Official look for reasons to rotate. In 2 person officiating, look for reasons to go ball side.

3. When making decisions on the floor, your mind must keep up with your eyes.

4. Read some part of the Manual everyday.

5. On dunk attempts, the Trail and Center Official have to be aware of point of contact plays.

6. In the Trail position, be ready to assist with A-B contact on plays to the ring, assist with a cadence whistle.

7. When a coach asks a question, answer the question using rule book terminology. 

8. Have Strength without  Arrogance.

9. Have Humility without Weakness.

10. When working the Trail position in “3” person, don’t give up your sideline. This is a starting point to get open angles. In “2” person in the Trail Position, go where you need to go to obtain an open angle.

1. In a”3” person game, if you don’t know who the ball went out of bounds on, ask for help from the nearest official, if they don’t know, they should go to the third official who should make the directional signal or the held ball signal.

2. In a “2” person game, if you don’t know who the ball went out of bounds on, ask for help from the nearest official, they should give the directional signal or a held ball signal. 

3. On multiple defender plays in the lane, all three officials are responsible, officiate the closest defender to you.

1. The Center Official is responsible for Curl and Crossing Plays.

2. The Trail and Center Official must officiate A-B contact on plays to the rim. 

3. Any disruption of SQRB movement of offensive and defensive players  due  to illegal contact is considered a foul.

​4. SQRB stands for Speed, Quickness, Rhythm and Balance. 

5. The Trail and Center Official must protect the Lead’s back side.

​6. The Trail and Center Official must officiate where the Lead cannot.

1. Know your speaking captains on the floor at all times. Answer questions in a professional tone. The captains of a team at times is your “voice of reason”, if they are not, find your “voice of reason”. Knowing your “voice of reason” can help you control a game. If there are no “voices of reason” on the floor, you must have great awareness on the floor.

2. Know the difference of controlling, managing or “choking” the game.

3. Every time a team substitutes it could change match-ups and the personality of the game. 

4. Go over uniform and equipment rules before each game.

5. Read “5” case book plays every day.

A. Possession Consequence- Patient Whistle.
B. Clean-Up- Immediate Whistle.

A. Lead- Strong Side.
B. Center- Weak Side.
C. Trail- Perimeter and will assist on Weak and Strong Side.
