The Game-Joe Forte

When you think of the game it has certain aspects to it.

 1. The Start

 2. The middle of the first half
 3.  The end of the first half.
 4.  Start of the second half.
 5.  Middle of the second half
 6. Game ending situations.

1, The Start : This is the time that we enforce the rules and guidelines of play. We set the tempo or tone of the game. We do not allow players to set the tempo .. Now with that in mind we must be aware of our play selectivity and above all accuracy. We cannot call marginal fouls for that will set the tempo. Play calling during this period of the game must be 100 % correct. We must know who the key players are and referee them with a high certainty of play calling. In the college game this is particularly important. Why because when they pick up 2 early fouls they go to the bench. Therefore, to set the tempo we want only good quality calls . Obvious illegal acts must be called the entire game. This is also the time where the official must not allow for the adrenaline to take over. It is not nerves, it is adrenaline and you must control it. Think of it as this : When all the emotions and excitement of the start of the game is on one level , we must find our level of complete calm and control on another level. Certainly not the level of players. This calmness will keep us from reacting to plays , allowing for us to process plays then react either with a great call or no call. It's that simple. Players emotions will settle down and return to normal as they play the game. They settle in. We are already settled in.

2. The Middle : Depending on time and score, this is when teams start to make adjustments. Subs enter the game for reasons. You must know and understand those reasons. Speed the game up , perhaps to get physical , match up changes . However , we do not change. We will continue to enforce the rules and stay within the tempo we set.

3. End of Half: Continue to referee at a high level of excellence. We closed out the half as we started the game.

4. Start of Half : Nothing has changed. We continue to referee the game as we started it. Superb play calling. However , we now must be aware of fouls and what players are in danger. And once again we are aware of it and the consequences of our whistles. If an obvious foul is present we call it. It's that simple. Marginal contact we process it with a great no call. One of your greatest assets is being in total awareness of the game.

 5. Middle second Half : Depending on game situations : Game is a blow out. Stay focused and now we go into game management mode. If the game is very competitive we stay with our tempo and smart play calling.

 6. The End : Come together during time outs. CC ( Referee ) In charge of detailing game ending scenarios.   Team fouls , PF's , score , last second shots and game ending score or no score. If it comes down to the last shot all eyes on the shooter. Coverage for this situation goes out the window. You adjust to where you need to referee the game ending shot. As the game gets into the last minutes CC ( Referee ) will gather the crew and talk about game scenarios. Always remember more game time , more possessions. Less game time , less possessions. Guys you need to know this about possessions. Cannot take one away on a marginal call. You have to be perfect .     Thanks  Angelo
