While basketball officials are supposed to be prepared for any situation that develops, it’s rare to find one who hasn’t been rattled or intimidated at least momentarily. What separates a referee from an umpire is how the referee handles surprises. Look to crew members for additional information to get those early rulings correct and keep the game flowing smoothly.
