Not a Travel/Center Positioning

On this play, we have two teaching points. Watch  asTrimble as he initially fumbles the rebound, gains possession as he is falling to the floor and clearly takes both of his hands off of the ball to begin a dribble before he falls to the floor. There could also be an argument made here that he never establishes possession which would make this a very easy correct no call. Either way, the crew is correct in not having a whistle on this play. The takeaway from this play is to not be surprised by these type of plays that look illegal, but in reality are no calls.

It's also important on this play to discuss the positioning of the Center after the free throw is missed. We know that the center is initially responsible for the shooter and lane violations opposite before and during the attempt, but then must provide coverage of weak side rebounding. What do you notice about the center as this play occurs? What should he have done positioning-wise to have the best look at this important play in Overtime?

The lead does a great job of quickly getting over to referee this play.  Watch closely as the offensive player switches his pivot foot.  Often the lead will referee from the waist up and the trail below, but in this situation the lead picked up the feet as well and correctly calls a travel.

This is a two referee play as the lead moves with a purpose to get strong side.  Black #7 establishes his left foot as his pivot and lifts that foot before the ball is released.  This play is a NCI (no call incorrect). To have a higher percentage in getting this play correct, the trail official needs to take a step down to referee the play with an open look.

As we referee the defense we still need to ensure that the offense is legal. In this play watch as the trail official recognizes that Green #42 establishes his right foot as his pivot.  The official correctly calls a travel as his right foot moves before the ball is released.
