NFHS Edition
Excellent Quiz by Goht VanDenBrink
Q1. The free-throw shooter is injured and no substitute is available. What is the correct procedure?
a. The opposing team chooses the replacement shooter
b. The head coach or team captain selects a player who is already on the court to attempt the free throw(s)
c. The injured player must attempt the free throw(s)
d. The free throw(s) are canceled

Q2. A team can be charged with a technical foul for delaying the start of the game by one minute or more, provided the officials are aware the team was properly notified at least three minutes prior.

Q3. (Last-second try procedure)--- On the last shot of the period, the Center is table-side and is the Primary Coverage Area (PCA) official for a 3-point try. The Center signals the 3-point attempt. If the try is successful, the Trail is responsible for signaling the successful goal.   And if the try is unsuccessful, there is no need to signal the end of the period and in both case, Trail should not sound a whistle.

Q4. A1 attempts a try that is clearly offline and has no chance to enter the basket. The ball contacts the backboard, and while it is descending, B2 jumps and makes contact with the ball. This is Goaltending violation.

Q5: A1 makes a throw-in. The ball heads toward the basket and bounces on the rim, when B1 slaps it away. The official rules this as basket interference, and Team A is awarded 3 points.

Answers:
Q1: b the head coach or team captain of the injured player’s team selects a player who is already on the court to attempt the free throw(s). (NFHS 8-2)

Q2: True (NFHS 10-2-1a; Case Book 2.4.4)

Q3: True. Both NFHS and IAABO emphasize minimizing the use of the whistle on a last-second shot to avoid confusion with a foul call. A whistle should only be used if the official needs to rule that the try was not released in time or that a violation occurred prior to the release.(IRG 9:1:D, 9:1:E)

Q4 False. This is Legal play. Since the try had no chance to enter the basket, it is not considered basket interference or goaltending. Play continues. (4-22-1, 9-11)

Q5: False. This is basket interference by B1, but only 2 points can be awarded.
A throw-in does not count as a try, so even if the ball was thrown from behind the 3-point arc, the maximum that can be awarded is 2 points.(IRG 15-3-3; C.B 9.11.2C
