I1. In the Lead position, at times rotate at an accelerated pace. You do this to accept the play and receive it. You will have a better open angle.
2. Recognize your match-ups. Are they active, passive or Engaged.
3. Cadence whistles are used for secondary coverage only.
4. Center official be ready for Curl and Crossing Plays. Lead official leave Curl Plays alone.
5. On double whistles, get eye contact with your partners, get voice acknowledgement from your partners, go to the play and communicate.

Reminders on the Jump Ball-3 Person

1. Best tosser will toss.
2. Make sure each team has  “5” players on the floor.
3. Make sure each team is lined up correctly.
4. All three officials are responsible for the AP Arrow.
5. U-1 - observe toss.
6. U-2- Be responsible for the “8” non-jumpers.
7. U-1 and U-2 be ready for quick out of bounds plays and back court violations.
8. Remember the jumper cannot touch the ball more then twice, the jumper cannot catch the jump ball, the jumper cannot touch the ball on its way up, the jumper cannot leave the jumping circle until the ball is tapped.
9. If you are retreating to lead be aware of the following:
a. “3” point shot.
b. Block/Charge  Plays across the lane.
c. Above the Ring Play.
10. When going from U-1 to Lead  or U-2 to Lead, officiate the last defender or the defender that can hurt you the most.
11. When going from U-1 to Center or U-2 to Center,officiate from the “top of your eyes”, think “Big Picture and officiate moving players.
12. Know your clocks.

 1.Can an airborne player be granted a time out while they are over an out of bounds area? Yes or No.
2. Can an airborne player be granted a time out while they are over the division line to prevent a back court violation? Yes or No.
3. When a player is disqualified, can a team be granted a time out? Yes or No.
4. Can a team be granted a time out when a throw-in is in flight? Yes or No.
5. Can the throw-in team be granted a time out when the ball is at their disposal? Yes or No.
6. Can the opponents be granted a time out when the throw-in starts? Yes or No.

It is important for the Lead official to stay with the “crash” and let the center and trail follow the ball. On this the play, the Lead must officiate the 70% defense and 30% offense concept.

Team Driven

#12 Officials:

1. Will be Team Driven.
2. Each night crews will cooperate with one another.
3. Crews will avoid stealing calls to help with their play calling percentages.
4. The crew will provide additional support to crew members who are missing calls.
5. Stay within your crew role that you were assigned, only step out of your lane to support your crew member.
6. Will cut down on double whistles.
7. Remember go into your secondary when its a strike down the middle.
8. Run the game, don’t let the game run you.
9. Work every possession hard mentally and physically.

Trail:

1. Hand- Checks- S.T.I.R.- Guideline.
2. Travels- Face-Up and Split.
3. Screens- Visual, Back and Blind, Moving Players.
4. Drives- Diagonal, Strong-Side, Middle.
Position Adjustments. Back- side “help”.
5. Jump Shots- Pull-Up and “3” point shots.
6. Closely- Guarded Scenarios. “Top of Eyes”.
7. Traps- Look for Exits.
8. Rebound Responsibilities- Perimeter, help with strong side and weak side.
9. Above Ring Play- BI- GT- ETC.
10. “3” second coverage.
11. Clock(s).
12. Line Coverage.
13. Throw-In- “Sweep the Floor”.
14. Substitution Awareness.
15. Officiate where Lead cannot.

10. Fast- Break Coverage.
11. Jump Shots- At “Elbows”- Pull-Up- Curl-UP- Put-backs.
12. Line Coverage.
13. Clock(s).
14. Officiate where Lead cannot.
15. Weak-Side Post Play and Cutters.
16. Throw-In- “Sweep the Floor”.
17. Closely Guarded Scenarios- “Top of Eyes”.
18. Traps- Look for Exits.
19. Substitution Awareness.

1. Drives Strong side.
2. Secondary defenders on all drives.
3. Strong Side Rebounds.

Guys  At 11 am today we will be posting a short episode " Thoughts and Recap " . Tomorrow we will be posting a new episode on game awareness , concentration , impact of subs entering the game ,  match ups.. etc, etc.. On Thursday Nov 21 we will post our episode on the trail position.  Hope all of you listen to our podcast.     Al Battista is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field of basketball rules at all levels.  In addition to this, he is a well-known clinician and observer of officials.   Currently, he is Maryland State and Board 12 Interpreter for scholastic basketball.  He has served as an officials’ observer for the NBA and WNBA and is currently the NBA chief scout for officials in the Northeast USA.
