Last 5 Minutes of the Game.

1/19/2023

Last 5 minutes of the game the officiating crew should be in high certainty “mode”.

This means the crew can not miss any obvious fouls or violations.

This means the crew needs to help on out of bounds plays, ball being tipped into the back court on a potential back court scenario, etc. No egos should be involved.

This means the crew should know the bonus, double bonus, fouls a team has to give and the AP Arrow.

The crew has to have excellent clock awareness and has to be detailed oriented on throw-in spots.

The crew has to know penalties, substitutions and key match-ups.

The crew has to be getting ready for the last second shot.

The game is not over until the crew is in the locker room.

Officiating Post Play

1/18/2023

When officiating post play, identify the first match-up. For Example, competitive, passive, engaged, small vs big and visa-versa. If you are working 2 or 3 person , its best to be on the side where the match-up starts in the Lead Position. For engaged or small vs. big and visa-versa, get to that side. The important aspect of post play is to rule on the first foul.

1. In the trail position in 3 person, do not overrun the play, stay 2-3 strides between the ball handler and be attached to the side line and make adjustments from there.

2. On jump shots in your area, try to get the angle before the try is attempted.

3. In 3 and 2 person work the system and trust your partners. There are still many unnecessary whistles.

4. Have a patient whistle in your secondary and be ready to assist when needed.

Center Position-Tips

As the Center Official, you need to be aware of post play when you do not have an active match-up. You also must be aware of curl and crossing plays coming at you. You must officiate one vs. one plays to the basket. When going from C-C and there is no pressure in the back court get to the FTLE. Be ready for plays at the ring in transition.
